Film director and stalwart of the French New Wave Jacques Rivette has died, 87, The Guardian reports. Known for now classics including Paris nous appartient (We own Paris, 1961), L’Amour Fou (Mad Love, 1969) and Celine et Julie vont en bateau (Celine and Julie go boating, 1974), Rivette also left a significant legacy in film criticism, working as a contributor of Les Cahiers du Cinema from 1953 (alongside the likes of Francois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol and Eric Rohmer) and then as editor until 1965.
Although more discreet than his New Wave counterparts, films like La Religieuse (The Nun, 1967), featuring Anna Karina as a woman looking to abandon her covent (censored before its release and then deemed 18 only), and La Belle Noiseuse (The Beautiful Troublemaker, 1961) exploring the creative renewal of an artist with his model, brought him to the public’s attention. His last film, starring Jane Birkin, was 36 vues du pic Saint-Loup (released as Around a Small Mountain, 2009).
