Mimi Brown, the director of Hong Kong‘s non-profit Spring Workshop, has announced that the space will close at the end of 2017, having reached the end of its five-yar programme, according to the South China Morning Post. Spring Workshop opened in 2012, on the third floor of a factory building in Hong Kong’s Wong Chuk Hang district, and quickly established itself as a vibrant alternative venue, with a markedly internationalist and cross-disciplinary programme of events, concerts, screenings and exhibitions, alongside its curatorial and artistic residencies. Brown said that she had planned to work on Spring for five years, to give herself the ‘impetus and focus’ of a deadline. Artists and curators to have worked with Spring include Heman Chong, Haegue Yang, Walid Raad, Elmgreen & Dragset and others.
Brown, who sits on the board of directors of the Asia Art Archive and is an adviser to Hong Kong’s Para/Site Art Space, told the Post that while she would retain the space, she wanted to turn her attention more towards international social and political issues.
