V-A-C Foundation has announced that Francesco Manacorda, currently artistic director at Tate Liverpool, will be joining its team as artistic director from September 2017. This appointment comes at a critical time for the private non-profit foundation, as it prepares to open a permanent space in a restored palazzo in Venice on 13 May, while a second, Renzo Piano-designed venue (the foundation’s headquarters) is underway in Moscow and due to open in 2019.
V-A-C is funded by Russian businessman Leonid Mikhelson and directed by Teresa Iarocci Mavica.
Manacorda joined Tate Liverpool in 2012, where he has worked on numerous monographic exhibitions of both modern and contemporary artists, including Piet Mondrian, Maria Lassnig, Francis Bacon and Leonora Carrington, as well as Nasreen Mohamedi, Ella Kruglyaskaya, Cathy Wilkes and Glenn Ligon. He also cocurated the 2016 Liverpool Biennial and was the curator of the Slovenian Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale and of New Zealand Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Prior to his current role, Manacorda served as a curator at the Barbican Art Gallery from 2007-9, and as director of Artissima, Turin’s contemporary art fair, from 2010–12.
