New York’s New Museum has revealed the details of its $63m expansion, with a new building designed by OMA architects Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu, in collaboration with Cooper Robertson. The new 62,000 sqft addition will stand alongside the institution’s Lower East Side home, which opened in 2007, and will double its exhibition space as well as hosting the museum’s cultural incubator NEW INC, a restaurant, a bookstore, a public plaza, an artist-in-residence studio, and bespoke spaces for community and education programmes. The façade, made of laminated glass and mesh, echoes the museum’s main building designed by the Japanese firm Sanaa, while reflecting its own identity.
James Keith Brown, president of the museum’s board, also announced that the building will be named after trustee Toby Devan Lewis, who pledged $20m to the project, representing the institution’s largest donation to date. Groundbreaking for the new building is scheduled for 2020, with an estimated opening date in 2022, yet the museum intends to remain open during the majority of the construction period.
