Kunst-Werke Berlin e. V. / KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Volkswagen Group have announced their first joint venture: the VW Research Fellowship. The fellowship will support research into the archiving of contemporary art, in particular relation to the history of KW Institute. The Berlin institution focuses on ‘the production, presentation and promotion of contemporary art’, while investigating current trends and cultural discourse surrounding national and international contemporary art.

The VW Research Fellowship is supported by Volkswagen AG and will focus on the ‘history and influence of KW in the city of Berlin’. The aim of this two-year research position is to digitise parts of KW’s archives and adapt it for publication, which will help create a more accessible collection for the public, researchers and teaching institutions. The research fellow will present their work in a series of discussions and public workshops and will receive a monthly stipend of €2,500 (gross) over a period of 24 months, paid on a quarterly basis.

The VW Research Fellowship has published the following application requirements:
The fellowship is aimed at graduates in the specialised fields of art history, archive studies, library science or related faculties. Special criteria include experience in archiving and contemporary art along with an initial outline for realising the project and publicising the archive through a series of public events. Fluent in spoken and written German and a permanent place of residence in Berlin is essential to the position. It is the research fellow’s responsibility to ensure that his/her other activities are compatible with his/her obligation to fulfill the terms of the project.
