Anya Bostock, the Russian-born translator and critic, had died. Bostock, who was married to John Berger throughout the late 1950s and the 1960s, was chiefly known for her translations of Trotsky, Wilhelm Reich, Lenin and Marx, though she also produced English language versions of Le Corbusier’s design manual Le Modulor; Aimé Césair’s exploration of post-colonial black identity, Return to My Native Land; and texts by Ilya Ehrenburg, Paul Eipper and Ernst Fischer among others.
On graduation from Oxford, Bostock had worked in the Russian monitoring section of Reuters in London and contributed book reviews to the Manchester Guardian. On separating from Berger, her second husband, in the 1970s, she contributed to Spare Rib and was vocal in the Women’s Liberation Movement.
