Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo has announced today at a press conference she will be opening a new foundation in Madrid. The Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo will be inaugurated in 2019 in the spaces of Nave 9, located in the early twentieth-century buildings of Matadero, a former slaughterhouse turned into a sprawling cultural centre. The 165,415 sqm venue, which belongs to the city council, is to be transformed by architects David Adjaye and Arturo Franco into multi-purpose space to host exhibitions, educational and research programmes, as well as events.

The Italian collector and philanthropist first established the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin in 1995, and has been presenting its contemporary art collection as well as organising exhibitions across its two venues: the  Palazzo Re Rebaudengo in Guarene d’Alba, a converted eighteenth-century mansion opened in 1997; and the Turin Center, the Fondazione’s main venue, a custom-designed museum opened in 2002.

Sandretto Re Rebaudengo said she chose Madrid to ‘broaden the scope of the institution’ to a major European capital that represents ‘a bridge to Latin-American culture, a growing scene, which I have been watching closely for a long time’.
