The Malaysian artist Roslisham Ismail, known as Ise, has died.
The founder of the artist space Parking Project, which was based in his Kuala Lumpur apartment, Ise’s practice spanned installation, animation, collage, publications (he was a co-founder of the Malaysian art publication sentAp!, which abbreviates a phrase which translates as ‘art without prejudice’) and social practice, and was informed by popular culture. In work such as his 2009 collage NEP, stickers, posters and other ephemera advertising the services of illegal migrant workers in Malaysia were used to explore the official and unofficial histories of Southeast Asia.
He participated in major international exhibitions including the Istanbul Biennale (2005); the Jakarta Biennale (2009); the Singapore Biennale (2011); and the Sharjah Biennale (2019). He was the subject of a major solo exhibition at the National Gallery in Singapore (2015), while 2016 project with Kelly Street collaborative in New York, The Self Help Open Space Project, was typical of his work in being inspired by the history of the local area and community.
ArtAsiaPacific reports that the artist passed away in Kula Lumpur due to complications caused by kidney disease, a condition he had been managing for several years.
