Volta art fair has been cancelled with less than two weeks to go before its opening in New York. The organisers have pledged to fully refund all of its exhibitors, as well as its sponsors.
The decision was made after the Armory Show was forced to relocate from Pier 92 in midtown Manhattan (it also takes place on Pier 94) over concerns about the the structural integrity of the venue. The Armory’s part-relocation to the nearby Pier 90, where its sister fair Volta was planned to take place, entailed the cancellation of the latter. Both the Armory and Volta are owned by Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. and the decision was described as unavoidable given the last-minute nature of the circumstances.
Volta, which is devoted to emerging galleries and tightly focused presentations of one or two artists, was to have featured 70 galleries. Pier 90, to which certain sections of the Armory Show (which opens on 6 March) has been moved, is a few minutes’ walk south of Pier 94. Around a third of the Armory Show’s exhibitors will be affected by the moved to Pier 90.
