British artist Nathaniel Mellors, in partnership with the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, has won the Contemporary Art Society Award 2014. Now in its sixth edition, the prize offers £40,000 to the winning regional museum to commission a major new artwork for their permanent collection by an artist who is not yet well represented in museum collections in this country.

Mellors will create a film that will form the centrepiece of a fifteen-month exhibition on the themes of Samuel Beckett and the Theatre of the Absurd, combining fiction, sculpture, performance and film. This hybrid new work will be using the brutalist Preston Bus Station in Lancashire (recently Grade II listed) as a film set and inspiration.

24 November 2014.
