New York’s non-profit Artists Space has announced it has found a new location in Tribeca at 80 White Street, where it will be able to continue its programming of exhibitions and events. The new two-floor venue is to be entirely renovated, and is scheduled to open in 2018. Since ending its lease at its previous location in June 2016, Artists Space has been using its secondary venue, Artists Space Books & Talks, to continue its operations.
Founded in 1971 by arts administrator Trudie Grace and art critic Irving Sandler with the goal of assisting young, emerging artists, Artists Space quickly established itself as a key alternative space in New York. The space’s closure last year raised some concerns among the arts community about the economic pressures put on artists and arts organisations in downtown New York. Interestingly, 80 White Street is owned by Gerry and Martin Weinstein, the latter being one of the founders of the independent art space Art in General, which should guarantee Artists Space some stability.
