Tate Modern Director Chris Dercon announced he is to leave the gallery to take on a leading role at Berlin’s experimental Volksbühne theatre, the Guardian reports. The announcement happens less than a month after Director of Tate Britain Penelope Curtis revealed she would be stepping down to take charge of the Calouste Gulbenkian museum in Lisbon

An art historian, documentary filmmaker and cultural producer, Dercon was previously director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, before taking on directorship of the Tate Modern in 2011.

In 2017, Dercon will take over from Frank Castorf, who has been directing the experimental Volksbühne theatre since 1992. In the meantime, he will continue overseeing the Tanks extension, scheduled to open in 2016.

24 April 2015.
