Munich’s Haus der Kunst has announced the appointment of Andrea Lissoni as its new director. It ends a year-long search for a new leader after the museum’s previous director, Okwui Enwezor, resigned in June 2018 in acrimonious circumstances.
Lissoni – who leaves his role as senior curator at London’s Tate Modern and was previously curator at HangarBicocca, Milan – joins a celebrated institution which has endured a series of crisis in recent years. These include the cancellations of an exhibitions by Joan Jonas (travelling from Tate Modern) and Adrian Piper (travelling from the Museum of Modern Art, New York), the latter of which was controversially replaced by an exhibition of work by the male, German artist Markus Lüpertz, an official investigation into the museum’s alleged ties to Scientology by the local government and significant lay-offs. Lissoni will begin at the museum on 1 April.
