The Guggenheim Foundation has announced in a short statement that the next UBS MAP exhibition But a Storm is Blowing from Paradise: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa, set to open on 15 April at the Rockbund Museum in Shanghai, has been cancelled. According to the statement, this was a ‘mutual’ agreement between the Guggenheim and the privately run Rockbund Museum, due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’ that are unspecified.
The exhibition represents the third chapter of the Foundation’s UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, a three-phase collecting-cum-curating project started in 2012. The initiative has invited curators from South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa to take up two-year residencies resulting in the acquisition of a range of works from each region by the Guggenheim, as well as touring exhibitions (the second chapter, Under the Same Sun: Art From Latin America Today, debuted at the Guggenheim in New York, travelling to Museo Jumex in Mexico, and London‘s South London Gallery).
But a Storm is Blowing…, a 20-artist show curated by Sara Raza, was to have travelled to the Pera Museum in Istanbul mid-2017, but was also canceled in February.
