The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has announced Paris-based architecture practice Moreau Kunsunoki as the winner of the competition to design the new Guggenheim Helsinki, with their proposal titled, Lighthouse. Launched in June 2014, the competition generated 1,715 anonymous submissions, as well as controversy among the local community, due to fears over costs and the prominence of the proposed building in its location on the harbour, the New York Times reports.
As winner, Moreau Kusunoki will receive a cash award of €100,000 (approx. £70,000), while an award of €55,000 (approximately £39,000) will be given to each of the five finalist teams: agps architecture Ltd. (Zurich and Los Angeles), Asif Khan Ltd. (London), Fake Industries Architectural Agonism (New York, Barcelona, and Sydney) and SMAR Architecture Studio (Madrid and Western Australia).
