After six years in the post of Director of London’s National Gallery, Dr Nicholas Penny, who will be 65 at the end of this year, has announced that he will be retiring in 2015.
During his tenure the National Gallery staged its most successful exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci, Painter at the Court of Milan, in 2011-12. Dr Penny will stay in post until the recruitment and appointment process for his successor, which begins now, is complete. The position is appointed by the National Gallery’s trustees, with the approval of the Prime Minister.
Prior to his appointment as the National Gallery Director Dr Penny was Clore Curator of Renaissance Painting at the National Gallery between 1990 and 2000 and Andrew W. Mellon Professor at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts from 2000 to 2002. He returned to the National Gallery to be Senior Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts from 2002 to 2008.
