India’s growing affluent classes are turning away from buying cars, jewels and gadgets and turning on to buying art, suggests a feature in india’s The Ecomomic Times

One such collector, profiled in the article is Pankaj Kehr, a manufacturer and exporter of medical equipment who, having established his business, would much rather support India’s art scene and engage with the international artworld than buy another car.

‘Earlier, even the people who used to buy art did so to fulfill their self esteem needs, to show off. But now that is changing. People are beginning to buy art to fulfill their aesthetic needs’, Kehr is quoted as saying.

Events such as the India Art Fair and the Kochi Biennale have also given contemporary art a higher profile amongst India’s wealthy.
