Udo Kittelmann, curator of Berlin’s Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, will step down from his position in October 2020 when his contact expires. Kittlemann has served as curator to the institution for 12 years and currently heads numerous state art museums such as Neue Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof and Alte Nationalgalerie. Kittelmann was the curator behind shows that have spotlighted Gerhard Richter, Otto Piene and Hilma af Klint at the Hamburger Bahnhof, as well as an exhibition of Andreas Gursky’s work at the Museum Frieder Burda. He also managed the Neue Nationalgalerie’s €101 million renovation which is due to be completed this year.
In a statement following the announcement, Hermann Parzinger, president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, said that Kittelmann has made the Nationalgalerie ‘a global player both nationally and internationally’, while the general director of the state museums of Berlin, Michael Eissenhauer, said that Kittelmann’s vision for museums ‘always puts people at the centre’ and that ‘he continues to stimulate the international art and museum discourse.’
Joachim Jäger, who is currently head of the Neue Nationalgalerie will serve as interim director of the state museums until a permanent head is appointed.
