The Philadelphia Museum of Art has announced the ‘Future Fields Commission in Time-Based Media’, a collaborative initiative with Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo for the commissioning and acquisition of new work in the field of time-based media, including video, sound, film and performance art. The initiative will support the production of a commissioned work every two years, which will be presented by the Museum and the Fondazione.

The inaugural commission has been awarded to Rachel Rose. She was selected by Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (president) and Irene Calderoni (curator) at the Fondazione; and by the Museum’s curatorial staff including Carlos Basualdo, Erica F. Battle and Amanda Sroka.

Rose came to attention after graduating from Columbia University in 2013, for videos such as Sitting Feeding Sleeping (2013) and Palisades (2014),and has had solo exhibitions at the Serpentine Galleries (London) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (both 2015). She was an ArtReview Future Greats artist in 2014.

Rose’s new work for the Future Fields commission will be set in 16th century agrarian England, exploring the relationship between reality and perception, history and coincidence. The Museum will host the work’s premiere in spring 2018, with its first international exhibition to follow at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin in winter 2018.
