Andrew 'Andy Dog' Johnson, 1959–2016

Andrew Johnson, known as Andy Dog during the 1980 and 90s, an artist whose work was instantly recognisable from the fame he found producing the coverart for almost all The The’s albums between 1981–1993, has died. Referencing the English neo-romantic movement his work would invariably depict brightly rendered figures: sometime contemplative, sometimes anguished surrealist souls. Johnson was the brother of Matt Johnson, the only constant member of The The. Andrew Johnson studied art at Camberwell College, London, under children’s illustrator Charles Keeping and on graduation he fronted post-punk outfit Camera 3 and would also play alongside the band Crass.
