Ho Chi Minh City-based non profit Sàn Art announced it will be closing its studio and residency programme Sàn Art Laboratory indefinitely, after the ongoing session. The space cites an ‘increase in government scrutiny’ of its programmes, which recently led to the cancelling of three exhibitions and a warning issued by the Cultural Police to cancel an artist talk due to foreign attendance. Session 8, currently hosting Questal Tay, Vietnamese Nguyen Quoc Dung and Cambodian Dara Kong, will be the last one until further notice. An exhibition of the works produced during the residency will open on 10 May (more details here).

Launched in 2012, Sàn Art Laboratory offered three artists from and based in South East Asia and under the age of 40 a studio and living quarters for three months. The selected artists received USD1000 towards production costs and a small living allowance, as well as a concluding show at San Art.

22 February 2016.
