The Singapore-based curator June Yap has been announced as Singapore Art Museum’s new director of curatorial, programmes and publication, starting in September.
Yap joins the museum after a decade as an independent curator; she has previously been Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator for South and Southeast Asia (from 2012 to 2014), for which she curated the exhibition ‘No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia’ in 2013, and was deputy director and curator at the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore. In 2011, Yap curated the Singapore pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, presenting the work of Ho Tzu Nyen, and had previously curated the Singapore Pavilion at the Biennale in 2005. At the end of last year it was reported that she had withdrawn from her involvement as curator for the Singapore presentation at the 2017 Venice Biennale.
Yap joins Singapore Art Museum as it undergoes a major refurbishment, to be completed in 2021. The museum is still looking for a director, since the previous director stepped down last year after two years in the post.
