During Dubai Art Week, Rem Koolhaas’s OMA studio revealed its designs for a new multi-purpose arts space for Alserkal Avenue, Dubai’s arts and culture district, due to open this fall, Dezeen reports. Based on the transformation of four warehouses, the space will feature four 8.10 metre-high moving walls, able to slide and rotate depending on the event – from performances to large-scale exhibitions and conferences. OMA’s Iyad Alsaka said ‘The main strategy for the design of the event space is to blur the boundary between interior and exterior by bringing view and daylight into the space, and extending the action and events to the public square outside.’
Established in 2007, the Alserkal Avenue has become the home of a growing number of international art galleries including Ayyam Gallery (Beirut, London), Leila Heller Gallery (New York), the Third Line (Dubai) and most recently Waddington Custot (London). The cultural complex has also come to include alternative art spaces, design and media studios, a black-box theatre and independent cinema in a gradual move towards non-commercial dynamics.
