Taipei is to get a new art fair, directed by Magnus Renfrew, who cofounded Art HK in 2007. The Hong Kong fair was bought by Art Basel in 2012 and rebranded Art Basel Hong Kong, Renfrew remaining as director. The inaugural edition of Taipei Dangdai will be held in January 2019, which coincides with the Taipei Biennial, at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center and is to feature 80 exhibitors from Asia and elsewhere. ‘Dangdai’ means ‘the present moment’ in Mandarin.
‘Taipei is home to one of the longest-established gallery scenes in Asia,” Renfrew said in a statement ‘The city boasts world-class museums, a vibrant artist community, an internationally recognized biennial, and one of the most sophisticated collector bases in Asia. We are developing Taipei Dangdai as an additional opportunity for Asian galleries to bring their programs to wider audiences, and for international collectors to have a significant point of entry for discovering important works from Asia and beyond.’
Gallery applications will be judged by a selection panel that includes Patricia Crockett (Sprüth Magers), Waling Boers (Boers-Li Gallery), Isa Lorenzo (Silverlens Galleries), Edouard Malingue (Edouard Malingue Gallery), and Elisa Uematsu (Taka Ishii Gallery).
Renfrew was, more recently, deputy chairman of Asia at Bonham’s auction house. This new fair is a joint venture between the British entrepreneur, his Art HK cofounder Tim Etchells and events managers Sandy Angus and Will Ramsay.
