Chicago based artist Theaster Gates’s first UK public project will be a collaborative 24-hour-a-day sound and spoken word performance to take place in the ruined remains of Bristol’s Grade II listed, fourteenth-centuryTemple Church, looked after by English Heritage.
Titled Sanctum, the project, for which Gates has invited musicians and performers from across Bristol to become involved, will take place in a temporary structure inside the church, constructed from discarded materials sought out by Gates from former places of labour and religious worship across the city.
Produced by international public art producers Situations, Sanctum will take place from 29 October through 21 November 2015, as part of the Art Weekender – Bristol & Bath, a three-day celebration of visual arts across both cities, also produced by Situations, and involving over 35 arts venues, artist-led projects and activities. Gates will give a performance lecture at St. George’s, Bristol to celebrate the opening of Sanctum on Saturday 31 October at 7pm.
