Turkish artist Banu Cennetoğlu’s installation titled The List has been destroyed again after its removal by vandals just a few weeks ago. The list features the names of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who died have while trying to reach Europe since 1993. The project, which currently lists 34,361 names (as of May 2018), is among works displayed at Liverpool Biennial and was only replaced last week. Cennetoğlu has decided not to replace the torn installation as a ‘reminder of the systematic violence exercised against people.’ The List, which is a database collated and updated each year by United for Intercultural Action (a European network of 550 antiracist organisations) and distributed via the work of Cennetoğlu, has been installed in other cities, though never vandalised before. A spokesperson for the Liverpool City Council has said: ‘We are saddened by this mindless act of vandalism’ and will work alongside the biennial to ‘shine a light on how we need to do more to promote a tolerant and compassionate society.’
