Karen Archey, the American curator and critic (and ArtReview contributor), has been appointed curator of contemporary art for time-based media at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In her new role, Archey will strengthen museum’s presentation and holdings of digital media, performance, dance and sound art, starting with curating the first museum solo exhibition of artist Stefan Tcherepnin opening in October 2017. She will also be responsible for the Gemeentelijke Kunstaankopen 2018, the first municipal acquisition exhibition dedicated to time-based art at Stedelijk.
Prior to this role, Archey worked as an editor at the New York-based organisation e-flux (2014–17), where she notably launched the participatory web publishing platform e-flux conversations, as well as curator-in-residence at Abrons Arts Center (2012–13) and editor-at-large of Rhizome at the New Museum. In 2016 she received the Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for short-form writing. Recent curating projects include Sharing Love, the monographic exhibition of media artist Ann Hirsch at ICA at MECA in Portland, Maine (2016) and the survey exhibition Art Post-Internet at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing (2014, cocurator).
