Chinese curator, critic, author and art historian Huang Zhuan has died, age 58, Art Asia Pacific reports. He had been battling with cancer for many years.
In the 1980s Huang started working as an editor for Meishu Sichao (Art Trends), a seminal avant-garde journal on art and criticism in China, before moving into research and curatorial roles at Shenzhen’s He Xiangning Art Museum. He later took on the directorship at OCAT Shenzhen, and was instrumental in founding the new OCAT Institute which opened in Beijing last year. Throughout his career, Huang maintained a teaching position at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and published numerous essays on modern and contemporary Chinese art history, as well as the state and development of art criticism and production in China. Curating projects includes the first Guangzhou Biennial (1992); the 3rd Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (1999), at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; and the 1st Guangzhou Triennial (2002).
