The British Library, UK’s largest, most expensive, and arguably most controversial public building of the 20th century, has been awarded Grade I-listed building status, the highest heritage honour, The Guardian reports. The London institution, designed by Colin St John Wilson, was inaugurated by the Queen in 1998, more than 20 years after first receiving approval and with a £350m budget excess.
Other Grade I buildings in London include the Tower Bridge, King’s College London Chapel and the Palace of Westminster.
