Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg has been announced as winner of the 2017 Deutsche Börse Prize. Organised by the Photographer’s Gallery in London in partnership with Deutsche Börse Group, the £30,000 prize recognises a living photographer for a specific body of work in an exhibition or publication format in Europe presented over the past year.
Lixenberg was selected for Imperial Courts (1993–2015), a series of portraits of the residents of the Imperial Courts neighbourhood in Los Angeles, the epicentre of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, sparked by the beating of Rodney King by LAPD officers. Developed over 20 years, the series traces the individual stories of various members of the community, which the artist later expanded into a web documentary.
Lixenberg was selected among a shortlist of four, including Sophie Calle, Awoiska van der Molen and Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs. Their work is on show at the Photographer’s Gallery, London, through 17 June.
