M+ museum and Hong Kong Arts Development Council have announced that Shirley Tse will represent Hong Kong at next year’s Venice Biennale. The Hong Kong-born, Los Angeles-based artist will create a new site-specific installation for the SAR’s pavilion, curated by Christina Li.

Tse’s work has been shown internationally, including spaces such as Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge; the Museum of Modern Fine Art in Minsk, Belarus; Pasadena Museum of California Art and Osage, Hong Kong.

Following the precedent of three previous representing artists, M+ will host an exhibition of Tse’s Venice Biennale installation at the M+ Pavilion in 2020 to give the Hong Kong audience and opportunity to see the work.

In a statement, Li, who is based between Hong Kong and Amsterdam, has said: ‘I have long been following Shirley Tse’s intricate and daring sculptural practice, as well as her work as a dedicated art educator. This will be the perfect opportunity to showcase the geographical reach of Hong Kong contemporary art beyond the city’s borders to an international audience, and to re-introduce Tse’s work to the Hong Kong public.’
