Song-Ming Ang has been selected by the National Arts Council (NAC) to represent Singapore at the Venice Biennale in 2019. He will be presenting several new multi-media works including Music for Everyone: Variations on a Theme (which takes its title from a series of concerts organised by Singapore’s then-Ministry of Culture in the 1970s and 80s to encourage public appreciation of the arts), Recorder Rewrite and You and I – the latter two will invite participation from audience members. Ang, who was the 2011 recipient of NAC’s Young Artist Award, will work alongside curator Michelle Ho (gallery director of the ADM Gallery at Nanyang Technological University’s School of Art, Design and Media) to realise the project in Venice. A statement from FOST Gallery, which represents Ang, reads: ‘Sampling from the everyday and popular culture, Ang’s art practice revolves around ‘thinking about music’ as he adopts different approaches to create objects and encounters in various formats.’
