Tate has signed a memorandum of understanding with Shanghai’s Pudong Museum of Art in the latest step towards a long-term strategic partnership. The agreement, signed with the state-owned developer Shanghai Luijazui Group on 12 June, confirms that Tate will act as consultant, and lend items from its collection, to the riverside museum, which is due to open in mid-2021.
Designed by Atelier Jean Nouvel, construction of the Pudong Museum of Art in Shanghai’s East Bund district began in 2017. In a statement, Mr Zhu Di, General Director of the Art Department of China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, said that he looked forward to collaborating with Tate ‘as we build a new outward-facing art museum in the open, innovative and inclusive global city of Shanghai’. The partnership would, he hoped, ‘contribute to the promotion of cultural exchange worldwide, and the communication between the East and the West’.
