Danish painter Troels Wörsel has died, at the age of sixty-eight. Born in Aarhus, Wörsel moved to Germany in the 1970s, settling in Munich then in Cologne, where he became interested in Pop art and Conceptual art. His experimental approach to painting saw him question the formal components of the medium, often incorporating existing images into his work, and ceaselessly explore new ways of painting – Wörsel once fastened a paintbrush to an electric drill, or produced a series of works painted on the backside of canvases, turning the stretchers into frames.
Wörsel came to international attention in 2007 when he represented Denmark at the 52nd Venice Biennale, and is now represented in major art collections including Städtisches Kunstmuseum in Bonn, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Washington Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou in Paris and the MoMA in New York. His work has been represented by Aurel Schreiber, Berlin, Galerie Fred Jahn, Munich, Erhard Klein, Bonn, Susanne Ottesen, Copenhagen, David Nolan, New York, and Galleri Riis, Oslo.
