David Hockney’s 1972 painting Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold for $90.3m, including buyer’s premium, at Christie’s auction house in New York on Thursday evening. It became the most expensive work by a living artist ever to be sold at auction, smashing the record previously set by Jeff Koons’s Balloon Dog (Orange) (2000), which sold at Sotheby’s in 2013 for $58.4m.
