Theaster Gates to purchase bandstand in which Tamir Rice was shot dead by police

Theaster Gates is in negotiations to purchase the bandstand in which 12-year-old Tamir Rice was fatally shot by Cleveland police, the Chicago Tribune reports. Rice, who was black, was playing with a toy gun at the time of his death. The policemen were responding to an a emergency caller who had reported a person pointing ‘a pistol’ at random people in the Cudell Recreation Center. The caller twice said that the gun was ‘probably fake’ however. Gates is likely to install the municipal structure, which is being removed from the Cleveland park, on Chicago’s South Side, at the request of Rice’s family and the local community, promoting it as a site of reflection.
