The National Gallery of Canada has selected Vancouver-based artist Stan Douglas to represent Canada at the upcoming Venice Biennale in 2021. A committee comprising John Zeppetelli, Director and Chief Curator, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal; Reid Shier, Director, The Polygon Gallery; Kitty Scott, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, National Gallery of Canada; and Sasha Suda, PhD, Director and CEO, National Gallery of Canada cited Douglas’ ‘continuing re-imagination of the mediums of photography and multi-channel film and video installation’ in a statement announcing his selection.
Douglas, who has been active in the Canadian and international art scene since the late 1980s, has been involved in four previous editions of the biennale. Working primarily with photography and film, his work explores the ways in which technology mediates the process of imagemaking whilst also highlighting the plight of minority groups throughout history.
Douglas’ video installation Doppelgänger (2019), is on view at David Zwirner, New York from 16 January through 22 February and also at Victoria Miro, London from 31 January through 14 March.
