The Philippines’ National Commission for Culture and the Arts and its Department of Foreign Affairs have announced that artists Manuel Ocampo and Lani Maestro will represent the country at the 2017 Venice Biennale. Titled The Spectre of Comparison, the show will be curated by Joselina Cruz, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila. It will ‘proposes a reading of both the Philippines and the West through their works’, drawing on the artists’ multicultural backgrounds and experiences – Ocampo lives and works in Manila but lived in California for about then years in the 1980s and 90s, while Maestro splits her time between France, Canada, and the Philippines.
The 57th Venice Biennale will run 13 May – 26 November 2017.
