Thierry Raspail, founder and artistic director of the Lyon Biennale, has invited Emma Lavigne to co-curate the 2017 edition. This will be the second episode of Raspail’s themed trilogy of exhibitions around the keyword moderne – after Ralf Rugoff’s 2015 edition: La vie moderne.

An art historian, Lavigne is currently director of Centre Pompidou-Metz. Prior to this role, she served as a curator at Paris Cité de la Musique (2000–2008) where she set up a cross-disciplinary programme and curated many exhibitions devoted to the connections between music, sound and contemporary art; in 2008, she was appointed curator of contemporary art at Centre Pompidou in Paris where she organised seminal exhibitions including Elles@centrepompidou, Danser sa vie (further exploring the relationship between dance and visuals arts) and the Pierre Huyghe retrospective in 2015. She was also the curator of the French pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale with Céleste Boursier-Mougenot.
