An exhibition on May 1968, organised by the French Embassy in Beijing, has been censored by the Chinese government, French newspaper Ouest France reports. Titled L’art c’est vous! Les années 68 en France, the show was due to open today 14 June at UCCA in the art district of the capital, featuring archival photographs from the événements, as well as a selection of posters and caricatures.
A representative from the Chinese ministry of culture remained evasive as to why the show was banned, simply explaining that after examination by a group of experts, it was decided that ‘the exhibition shouldn’t be held’. Among the the caricatures and posters to be included in the show were representations of Mao Zedong and Charles de Gaulle, the latter also a popular figure for officially recognising Communist China in 1964.
