NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MAIO) announced that Cuban artist and activist Tania Bruguera will be taking on a newly created residency for one year at MAIO. Having just recovered her passport from the Cuban authorities, Bruguera will start her residency later in July, during which she will seek to create socially engaged art projects to encourage undocumented residents to register for IDNYC (the city’s free ID programme), help them access the local government and benefits made available, and to draw attention to pressing issues these communities are facing.
The Museum of Modern Art also announced today that Tania Bruguera’s Untitled (Havana, 2000), a work conceived for and shown at the VII Bienal de La Habana in 2000, will be the first work by the artist to join the collection.
