First Art Basel Cities partnership details announced

Art Basel and the City of Buenos Aires have announced details of the first Art Basel Cities initiative, a projects which sees the Swiss mega-fair forming partnerships with global city venues beyond those of its fairs in Basel, Miami and Hong Kong.

According to the fair, Art Basel Cities: Buenos Aires ‘will support the city’s cultural ecosystem including artists, galleries, nonprofit spaces and public institutions and … highlight its vibrant cultural scene, promoting it to a global audience and Art Basel’s extensive network’.

In 2017 the partnership will focus on providing structural support to the local art community with the launch of the Art Basel Cities Exchange, tp facilitate professional collaborations and catalyse support for cultural projects. The initiative will be launched this November with a series of events and workshops, in which local cultural partners will be invited to collaborate and to learn more about the future programme, ahead of a series of talks to take place throughout the year.

Elements of the Art Basel Cities Exchange include an internship programme and crowdfunding campaigns, as well as curatorial residencies,  artist exchanges and mentorships. An open call for the internship programme, placing young artworld professionals from Buenos Aires with leading galleries from acrossthe world, will be made later in the Autumn.

In September 2018, Art Basel Cities: Buenos Aires will present a week of public art programming directed by Cecilia Alemani, director and curator of High Line Art, New York.
