The Grand Palais, one of Paris’s major institutions, will be closing in December 2020 for a three-year renovation carried out by Franco-Italian architects LAN (Local Architecture Network), The Art Newspaper reports.
With an estimated cost of €466m (approx £414m), this represents the institution’s biggest and most expensive revamp since the building was inaugurated at the 1900 World’s Fair. Of the overall budget, €288m is donated by the French government, €150m is loaned by the Reunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN), while Chanel is giving €25m, in return for having the building’s grand entrance renamed after the fashion brand. According to the RMN, the organisation managing the institution, the overhaul will include a new entrance, six newly refurbished galleries and a new internal pedestrian street, linking the various parts of the complex.
The closure will force FIAC and Paris Photo, the two art fairs that use the venue, to relocate to temporary venues until the grand reopening, scheduled for the spring of 2023.
