Tate Britain announced today the four artist shortlisted for the 2016 edition of the Turner Prize, supporting a British artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition over the past year. The artists are:
Michael Dean (for his solo exhibitions Sic Glyphs at South London Gallery and Qualities of Violence at de Appel arts centre, Amsterdam); Anthea Hamilton (for her solo exhibition Anthea Hamilton: Lichen! Libido! Chastity! at SculptureCentre, New York); Helen Marten (for projects including Lunar Nibs at the 56th Venice Biennale and the solo exhibition Eucalyptus Let Us In at Green Naftali, New York); and Josephine Pryde (for her solo exhibition lapses in Thinking By the person i Am at CCA Wattis, San Francisco).
The award consists of £40,000 with £25,000 going to the winner and £5,000 each for the other shortlisted artists. This year’s Turner Prize exhibition will return to Tate Britain from 27 September – 8 January 2017, and the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in December on the BBC, the new broadcast partner for the prize. This year’s jury is chaired by Tate Britain director Alex Farquharson and includes Michelle Cotton (director of Bonner Kunstverein); curator Tamsin Dillon; Beatrix Ruf (director of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam); and Simon Wallis (director of the Hepworth Wakefield).
