Goldsmiths College – whose art school is alma mater of a generation of British artists from Liam Gillick, Sarah Lucas and Damien Hirst to Goshka Macuga and Laure Prouvost (not to mention one or two ArtReview editors) – has named Sarah McCrory, currently director of the Glasgow International festival, as director of Goldsmith College’s planned new contemporary art gallery. Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble has been selected to design the new gallery for the southeast London college (which, part of the University of London, has an arts and humanities focus), converting a former public baths and Victorian water tanks at the centre of the campus into a 1,000 sq. m exhibition and studio space. The opening is set for spring 2018.
McCrory has organised the past two editions of the Glasgow International in 2014 and 2016, and is the cofounder of Open School East, a nonprofit tuition-free art school. She was also on the selection committee of the British Pavilion for the 2017 Venice Biennale.
