In a humorous petition submitted on Change.org, artist Luis Camnitzer asks US President-elect Trump to commission the artist Christo to produce a version of the artist’s 1976 land art work Running Fence, rather than his planned border wall with Mexico. Catmnitzer, originally from Uruguay, cites the ‘great success’ that was Running Fence, a curtain of white nylon fabric stretched between steel poles throughout two counties in Southern California, created by Christo and his late wife Jeanne-Claude. ‘Though only 24.5 miles long then’ Camnitzer writes, ‘in full length today it would transform a racist project into a public art event, and help improve the image of the U.S. with a cultural veneer’.

Over 700 supporters have signed up already. Camnitzer told Artnet he didn’t expect it to be so successful, considering his previous humorous petitions, such as the one calling on Pope Francis to canonise the Disney character Scrooge McDuck, had receive less than ten supporters.
