The Gwangju Biennale Foundation has announced initial details of its 2018 edition, outlining the Biennale’s theme and a shift to a ‘multiple curator system’. Titled ‘Imagined Borders’, this twelfth edition will switch to a more distributed curatorial structure, after a number of editions led by a single artistic director. These have included Maria Lind (2016), Jessica Morgan (2014), Massimiliano Gioni (2010) and Okwui Enwezor (2008). In 2012 the Biennial was curated by an all-female group of co-artistic directors, including the Korean curator and academic Sunjung Kim. In July this year Kim was appointed president of the Biennale Foundation.
Alongside the main venue of the Biennale Hall, the 2018 edition’s venues will include the Asia Culture Center, the Gwangju Museum of Art and other cultural and historic spaces. ‘Imagined Borders’ will deal with ‘the national and geopolitical reconstruction that has taken place on a global level’, exploring ‘issues of politics, economy, and psychology, as well as matters of emotional concerns, of border/lessness, of existing inside/outside the border, and of being in-between the borders beyond geopolitical boundaries’.
