Fundación Casa Wabi and ArtReview are pleased to announce, and congratulate, the winners of the inaugural Fundación Casa Wabi ArtReview Residency Award. The open-call residency prize is for artists wishing to stay in Fundación Casa Wabi, Oaxaca, Mexico, for between one and three months during spring or autumn 2017. Applicants are asked to propose a project that engages with or benefits the local community in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.

The winners are:

Nasser Alzayani (Bahrain, USA). Alzayani uses observational drawing, writing, collecting, performance and installation to create works which are site-responsive to their surroundings. His proposal involves working with the local population to engage with aspects of their landscape that are meaningful to them, with the aim of creating a series of installations, in a variety of media, that respond to and incorporate both the landscape and the memories of the people involved. www.nasseralzayani.com

Dexter Dalwood (UK). Dalwood is a painter whose work explores the role of history painting. His proposal involves working with young people and young adults to explore the history of Oaxaca through visual representation, with the aim of creating a largescale work that in the process of its creation will ask questions about what history is and who it belongs to, and that will also make reference to Mexico’s mural painters. www.dexterdalwood.com

Marita Fraser (Austria). Fraser employs the visualisation of structures and diagrams to create works in collage, painting, sculpture and installation. Her proposal involves a continuation of ongoing research into how textile fabric can be used to disrupt contemporary painting, sculpture and installtion. She will initiate workshops with the community to dye fabrics using local everyday materials, which will then be used to create hangings and other sculptural works. www.maritafraser.com

Located near Puerto Escondido, Mexico, Fundación Casa Wabi is an interdisciplinary project whose mission is to promote the exchange of ideas, fostering an open and constructive dialogue between national and international artists in a variety of practices and disciplines. Founded in 2014 by Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, and directed by Carla Sodi, the Foundation’s facilities include a multipurpose room, six studio-dorms and a 50-acre sculpture garden.

The winners were chosen by a jury comprising: Mark Rappolt, ArtReview editor-in-chief, Christian Viveros-Fauné, art critic and curator, and Alberto Ríos de la Rosa, Casa Wabi Residencies Program Director, based on the quality of the applicants’ work, the potential for their community project and its feasibility within the region.

Fundación Casa Wabi and ArtReview would also like to thank all those who applied to the open-call for sending in their proposals.
