Max Hollein has been announced as the new director of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Newspaper reports. Currently the CEO and director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF), Hollein’s appointment comes after more than a year of decision-making since former director Thomas P. Campbell announced his resignation in February 2017 after eight years in the role. Hollein was chosen from more than 100 candidates for his experience and, according to board member Candace Beinecke, as ‘someone who had a proven record as a museum leader’. Joining FAMSF in 2016, Hollein previously served as director of the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, and the Städel Museum and Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection, also in Frankfurt; in 2000, he organised the US pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Austrian pavilion at the 2005 Venice Art Biennale.
As director, Hollein will be expected to oversee ‘31 departments, including 17 curatorial offices and five conservation teams, as well as the research, education, digital media, publications and design divisions, and manages the collection, acquisition funds and gifts and bequests from patrons’. He will take up the new position this summer.
