Tony Conrad, the experimental artist, innovative musician and filmmaker, has died at age 76. He is recognised as an avant-garde artist and for his role in the Theatre of Eternal Music, a mid-1960s group formed by La Monte Young, whose main focus on drone music popularised the neo-Dada aesthetic in the West. His first film, The Flicker (1966), which made use of stroboscopic effects, is regarded as a key work in structural filmmaking.
Conrad’s works appeared in the 2009 Venice Biennale, the 2006 Whitney Biennial, and the 2005 Lyon Biennial. Greene Naftali held his lastest solo show, Undone, earlier this year.
